Brazilian soccer Legend Pelé dies at 82
Today we celebrate Pelé, a Brazilian soccer legend who won three World Cups and became the sport’s first global icon. On Thursday, Pelé passed away at the age of 82. In late November, the legend was admitted to Albert Einstein Hospital located in São Paulo Brazil, for a respiratory infection and for complications related to colon cancer. It was only last week where the hospital said his health had declined as his cancer progressed. Pelé passed from multiple organ failure due to the progression of colon cancer.
Ever since the news following his death, social media has flooded with numerous posts surrounding Pelé and his remarkable career. His daughter, Kely Nascimento, penned a tearful post via Instagram expressing her love for her late father writing,
“We love you infinitely. Rest in peace.”
Known for only his first name, Pelé truly made his mark on earth and many celebrities and athletes emphasized that as they posted photos with Pelé. Posts from former President Barack Obama, soccer legends Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, all paid respect to the G.O.A.T. Pelé is one of one holding three world cups, and well known for his soccer accomplishments. It is important to know Pelé was not only a soccer legend but also a humanitarian and global icon. Pelé used his platform to empower disenfranchised children and inspire generations around the world.
While we say goodbye, we know Pelé’s impact will live forever.
Rest in Peace Pelé.
