BROOKLYN — On Saturday, New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu became the first player in WNBA history with 500 points, 200 rebounds, and 200 assists in a single season. After an assist to Crystal Dangerfield on Liberty’s opening possession, Ionescu broke the record in less than 30 seconds opening the game to a historic start. Ionescu scored 20 points, secured five rebounds, and had five assists. Despite great effort, the Liberty fell to the Phoenix Mercury, 76-62. Mercury took the season series and extended their playoff streak to 10 seasons.

Fret not, the Liberty remains on the hunt despite this setback. With only half a game behind the Mercury, a game behind the seventh-place Dream, and three games behind the sixth-place Wings. There are just two games left against both the Dream and Wings but the Liberty will have a chance to get back in the playoff picture.

The Liberty are celebrating despite the loss, as Ionescu’s incredible accomplishment raises eyebrows nationwide. Just two players reached 500 points, 150 rebounds, and 150 assists in a WNBA season, Cappie Pondexter and Candace Parker! Therefore Ionescu’s stats has broken the charts as she significantly surpassed those numbers groundbreakingly. The 5-foot-11 guard is the only player in the league in the top 15 in all three categories. After a frustrating start to her career, Ionescu is revealing why she was one of the best college players of all time and the No. 1 overall pick in 2020. We can’t take our eyes off Ionescu’s great impact on the WNBA — and she’s only just begun!
