NBA: Draft Night - Round 1

NEW YORK — It was a special night in Brooklyn, New York, as the Barclays Center hosted the 2023 NBA draft. The remarkable night had an emotional jump start when the San Antonio Spurs selected multi-skilled French big man Victor Wembanyama with their No.1 pick of the night. Known as Wemby, the hype circulating throughout the media had all eyes on the 19-year-old 7’4 French man for months leading to draft night. Although it was certain he’d snag the number one pick, Wemby truly looked emotional when his name was called. Check out his interview below to fully capture this special moment.

Humbly accepting his new team, Wemby made it clear that he understands the pressure that stems from being the No.1 pick and its expectations. The expectations are so high, especially in the wake of Zion Williamson — the last Next Big Thing before his attendance on the floor was stumped by his appearance in the media— it can truly be detrimental to a young player’s debut. However, Wemby is not phased by it as he’s set his own expectations stating,

“I don’t let all this stuff get to my head,” Wembanyama said. “I have such high expectations for myself, I’m immune to all this stuff, I really don’t care.”

The NBA world is certainly excited to see Wemby work his magic under the leadership of Spurs President Greg Popovich — it sounds like something special is in the works!
