MELBOURNE — Jamaica became the first Caribbean nation to reach the knockout phase of the Women’s World Cup, sending Brazil home in the process. A valiant Jamaica held Brazil to a 0-0 draw on Wednesday to reach the knockout phase for the first time in history. Get this…it was only Jamaica’s second game in the Women’s World Cup and certainly a joyful one. Named the Reggae Girlz, the Jamaican team is having a remarkable debut in their first-ever World Cup. It all started with their debut against Panama on July 29th as they defeated them 1-0 to start off the historic run. It’s been up for Jamaica since! Jamaica had never previously reached the knockout stages of a World Cup – men’s or women’s – prior to the 0-0 draw in Melbourne on Wednesday.

Here’s a history recap, Bob Marley’s daughter, Cedella, helped save Jamaica’s women’s soccer team and they’re making a historic run in their 2023 World Cup debut. Back in 2014, Cedella’s son came home with a fundraising flyer for the women’s soccer team. The women’s team funding was being cut while the men’s team remained fully funded. Cedella decided to change that as she teamed up with many players on a journey that raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and challenged gender norms. The fight was far from over as the team was defunded once again in 2016. Cedella doubled down on her commitment to the team and this time she recruited major donors to help get the team back on track. In 2023 the Jamaican team defeated Panama 1-0 earning their first-ever win. Safe to say, it’s only the beginning for this team and their historic run.
