Lionel Messi carries Inter Miami CF to Winning their 1st Trophy in the 2023 Leagues Cup

MIAMI, FL — At this point, what can’t the Argentinian phenom do? Lionel Messi’s impeccable performance helped Inter Miami win over Nashville SC in the 2023 Leagues Cup Final, claiming his first trophy with the club. Messi has accumulated 44 trophies, earning the goat the title of having the most individual trophies in the history of football. What makes this story even more groundbreaking is before the Messi effect, Inter Miami had the worst record in MLS, and they ended that narrative last night, winning the Leagues Cup and crowning themselves as champions.

GAME RECAP

Inter Miami defeated Nashville 10-9 on penalty kicks in the final of the 47-team tournament. The penalty shootout was secured by Inter Miami’s goalkeeper Drake Callender’s two saves on Nashville midfielder Randall Leal and goalkeeper Elliot Panicco. Callender won it with a save and sent the crowd wild. Messi dribbled past Nashville defender Walker Zimmerman and nailed a shot into the top left corner of the goal leading 1-0. That goal elevated Messi to his 10th goal in seven games since joining Inter Miami last month! Unreal. Although Nashville answered back, scoring in the 57th minute when Fafa Picault scored off a corner kick, Inter Miami secured their first-ever Leagues Cup!

The journey of the Messi Effect continues as Inter Miami will be back on the field Wednesday against Cincinnati in the U.S. Open Cup. Can this story get any better for the goat?!
