FIFA: Spain Wins First Women’s World Cup Title
SYDNEY, AU— Despite a controversial year, Spain secured their first World Cup Title and defeated England 1-0. All it took was Olga Carmona's goal in the 29th minute that was needed for Spain to win its first World Cup title. Although a low-scoring game, Spain shredded through England with an outstanding high-level performance. Spain executed their game plan and after a trademark first-half performance set the tone, they kept up the momentum and had a solid second-half performance despite England's forward-minded momentum sealed the deal for the first-time champions. Spain joins the United States, Germany, Norway, and Japan as World Cup champions. It also completes a treble for La Roja, which won the Under-20 and U-18 World Cups last year. The win was memorable, but Spain did it without a handful of top players because of an ongoing protest against the Royal Spanish Football Federation. In fact, players refused to celebrate with head coach Jorge Vilda en route to the final moments of the game.
The Controversy
Controversy had enveloped La Roja since last September when 15 players sent a letter to the Spanish FA saying they would not play for the team as long as Vilda remained in charge. The players questioned his training methods and tactical standards, and they also had complaints about his behavior toward them. The controversy is still boiling over despite a win; coach Jorge Vilda has been under fire by the media.
