NFL: Headliner Trades & Releases

NEW YORK — The NFL has been causing quite the buzz during its offseason. And with quarterback Aaron Rodgers potentially signing with the New York Jets, it makes sense why the NFL is taking over headlines this week. The quarterback danced around the idea of signing with the Jets for several days after he said he intends to play for the J-E-T-S J-J - you get the point. Rodgers released a statement that foreshadowed his next move would be to New York.

“I made it clear that my intention was to play for the New York Jets,” Rodgers said.

As of today, there was no trade officially announced although Rodgers expects to be geared up in green and white this upcoming season. While retirement was mentioned by Rodgers, it was never fully revealed which direction the vet quarterback would take. And the picture is still unclear as the Jets work on communicating with Green Bay to place a trade. Rodgers is causing quite the theatrics as we eagerly wait for a decision to be made. Prior to all the drama, Aaron Rodgers went on an isolated darkness retreat a few weeks ago — where he reportedly stayed in darkness for four days in a small house — he was 90 percent sure he was going to retire. It seems every day the news shifts depending on Rodgers’ mood.

While Green Bay is mourning the potential exit of their vet quarterback, the Dallas Cowboys are sending a farewell to three-time-pro bowler running-back Ezekiel Elliot after 7 seasons. Dallas revealed earlier yesterday they were releasing the vet running back. The news does not come as a surprise as Tony Pollard has taken the spotlight and rightfully earned his starting position with 1,007 yds, and 9 touchdowns this season compared to Elliot’s 876 yds and 12 touchdowns.

In 2019, Ezekiel signed a six-year $90 million contract extension. Elliot received $50 million in guarantees that arguably was too much for a team that barely had a solid offensive line. The departure Dallas made has freed up $10.9 million of salary cap space and added $5.8 million in dead money. With the NFL Draft approaching and many free agents, we can only see what's next from here! Many believe Elliot will reconstruct his contract and take less, but with Tony Pollard performing the way he has is it even worth a shot?

While Elliot has not released a comment on his next move, quarterback Dak shares his view on his teammate moving on.

“I really can’t imagine taking on the field without him,” said Prescott.
